A Room As Seen From Above

The institution is closed, but the story is far from over for the many people who lived and worked there.

(The Oregon Clarion, Vol 6, number 3,  April 2000)

In 2000, the last residents of Fairview Training Center transitioned to residential homes to live their lives in their communities. 25 years later, we ask, what does Home look like for individuals whose lives are still heavily regulated by institutional and administrative systems? A Room as Seen From Above asks us to reflect on what makes a home feel like one’s own.

What would it look like if the residents designed the residential homes in which they live? Through the visual icon of the floor plan, we ask, what does your home need?

What would make you happy in your home?

Dardinelle Troen (she/her) is a creative artist, designer, and storyteller currently based in Portland and Astoria; she recently completed the “Going with Grace” End of Life Doula training program. Her design work primarily focuses on creating curated environments and infusing physical spaces with stories. Exploring the intersection of place and how stories leave their mark to shape a distinct character and connect with on an emotive human level lies at the heart of her process. Much of her recent focus as a designer has been in the area of trauma-informed care and design, which, combined with her personal spiritual journey, has led her to delve into the realms of grief and dying. This exploration is inspiring her to pursue end-of-life doula work. www.viemort.com/

“If I lived in a big house for me and Kyle, we would live in a dream house with a beautiful huge kitchen, a fine living room, and a dining table. A bathroom with a big bath. A big backyard with fences. And Kyle and I would be happy.”
